“And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul” Acts 4:32(a)
I Was the Woman . . .
APRIL 2005

We thank Mr. Dewayne Johnson, age 18,
from our Sunday Evening Youth Services,
for sharing his story of finding Jesus.

I Was the Woman . . . at the Well

I was the woman. “Well,” you may say, “you are a young man.” That’s true but I was woman. I was the woman at the well. I was the woman caught in adultery. “Oh,” you may say, “you still have your virginity. How is that possible?” I am talking about sin. I was caught. I was caught lying, stealing, cheating and a number of other things. I was caught talking back to my parents. I was caught doing wrong. So you see, I was the woman.

Another Chance at Life

I want to share with you how my life was before the Master, Jesus Christ, saved me. The woman at the well and the woman caught in adultery didn’t know the Master but in the end, they were both set free – set free from all sin. They were both given another chance at life. Isn’t that everyone’s cry today – to start over again? The Master did the unbelievable for them just as He did for me. He can do the same for you. Are you the woman at the well?

John 4:1, When therefore the Lord, knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John. Verse 3, He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. My Master had been traveling around, weary with His journey.

Souls, Souls, and More Souls

And he must needs go through Samaria. Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour (verses 4-6). This was so encouraging to me. It reminds me of the great commission called upon each child of God’s life. Souls, souls, and more souls are God’s number one business.

Jesus is our example in all things. I Peter 2:21 says For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps. I was the woman at the well. He saw me at the well trying to obtain something that only His precious, precious blood could buy. I had a longing to be free and didn’t even know it. I was reaching – searching for something – someone to help me but I didn’t know what.

Our Wonderful Redeemer

Christ, our wonderful redeemer, looketh beyond my faults and saw my greatest need – salvation. I was part of that great harvest that is white, white for reaping in this final hour. We all have been called to the soul winning business. Each one of us holds precious souls in our hands. Are you the woman at the well? I was. There I was waiting, waiting, waiting – for what, I didn’t know.

Give Me to Drink

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink (John 4:7). As I pondered this verse, I thought about the woman at the well, how I too was doing only that which I knew to do and there was the Master, waiting so patiently; watching over me like a mom does her young with so much love.

The Master, more than once, was trying to get my attention. He was trying to talk to me but I wouldn’t listen. I wanted to do what I wanted to do. I had my eyes on the fast money, the gangs, and the rap music – the world. Fantasizing about some day becoming famous, I was going to hell. Now, as I look back on it all, it was an illusion depicted by the devil. He had craftily painted out my future and he held it there anytime I wanted to think on it. I could never fit in and I am glad that I never fitted in. I am glad that I was not easily accepted by the cliques and the “renown” groups. Thank God!

Few There Be That Find It

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it (Matthew 7:13-14). I tried to fit in but it just didn’t work. It was like trying to squeeze a puzzle piece into the wrong spot.

Jesus answered and said unto her, whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life (John 4:13-14).

Someone Talk to Me

I needed to talk to somebody. I needed to talk to somebody who would take the time with me; who understood just where I was coming from. I needed to talk to someone who had power to change my sinful condition and give me a new mind. I was tired even though most young adults that I spoke to accepted this lifestyle as a way of life, yet there was a deep, penetrating yearning and thirst that had yet to be satisfied.

It had to be something more than what I was used to. It had to be a better way than the constant rebelling, rejecting of authority and giving into all types of devilish dishes served through my computer as I was locked away in my room. Young people are crying just as I was.

Everyone Needs Love

Everyone needs love. Everyone is looking for love. They are looking for love. They are looking for true love. They are looking for a love that won’t compromise the things of God – a love that is full of discipline, truth and grace.

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst (John 4:14). I was very thirsty in the world; looking for love in all the wrong places. I wanted acceptance. I wanted to fit in. I thought, “Can this thirst be quenched? Can I actually live free from sin? Can I have this water? Can I truly be free? I don’t have to be in bondage anymore? Can I be satisfied in this life?”

I Am the Bread of Life

Jesus told me, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst (John 6:35). Jesus went on to tell me in John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Jesus went on to talk to the woman at the well about her husband. He said to her Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet (verses 16-19).

I Was Being Drawn All the Time

First coming to the ministry, I started out by stopping in on Saturdays, when the choir practice was going on; I was being drawn all the time. Each time I came by I was being drawn in. I was being influenced to drink from this water. All the pastor had to offer me to drink was the word. The word always came first, no matter the problem, no matter the question. The answer was always the Thus saith the Lord; it was always, “Well the Bible says.” That’s all the pastor had for me. That was the water that satisfied my longing soul. It was the word of God that set me free. He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions (Psalm 107:20).

The Secret of Her Heart

I would talk to the pastor about this and about that. Initially, I never revealed to her the weight of the burden of sin that I was carrying. I never told her the darkness that was in my life. The woman at the well said, “Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.” Why did she declare that? Because Jesus Christ revealed the secret of her heart; He revealed that which no one could have known. That’s just the way it was for me.

The Word was delivered with such compassion, such love that my heart was pricked and conviction set in. I began to say to myself, “That’s me. That’s me. It’s being uncovered right before my very eyes.”

Salvation Is of the Jews

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him (John 4:21-23).

I was set free. I will never forget the day when I got the reality that I could actually live free from all sin in this perverse and wicked generation. “Salvation is of the Jews.” Oh, how did that ring and ring in my ears. Salvation, I could really have bible salvation. I was done with the world – done with the devil’s tricks.

I Went Back in My Life

I went back in my life, thinking more than once and more than twice, “There must be another way. There has to be more to life than sin, sin and more sin.” The other young people that I talked to, it was always gang banging and chasing women. I knew that it had to be a better way. There had to be a better way and Jesus heard that cry in my heart. My heard had a voice of desperation. Your heart too has a voice. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh (Matthew 12:34).

Jesus came with that same salvation that He presented to the woman at the well. I was thirsty just like she was. I was lost and looking for love just like she was. Her problem was a lack of love. There was no difference between us. I was the woman at the well.

What a Relief

To the youth today, we don’t have to do what the world is doing. We can be different; we can be full of the Holy Ghost. We can live pure and clean lives. Jesus said we can be set free. He is giving us everything that we need. We don’t have to go the way of the world. What a relief!

And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seeketh thou? Or, Why talkest thou with her? The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the City, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: it not this the Christ? Then they went out of the city, and came unto him (John 4:27-30).

She No Longer Needed Them

The woman at the well dropped her waterpot. She no longer needed waterpots. She left the weight that she had been carrying for so long. Sin is a weight and a burden. Sin will age you and rob you of youth and vitality. It will suck the life right out of you. I too dropped my old ways. I dropped my old way of thinking, talking, and acting. I dropped the way the world said I should be. I gained a new identity through the living word.

The woman at the well did not hesitate in dropping her waterpot once she had been set free. Come see a man. Come see a man. Come see a man. There are many who haven’t dropped their waterpots, yet they claim to be free.

Let Us Lay Aside Every Weight

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which do so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith (Romans 12:1-2a).

No Graves in Egypt

Some may drop their waterpots but go back and pick them up again. They have carried those weights for so long and like the children of Israel, instead of using and yielding to the promises of God, would rather chose death over life. God had prepared a deliverer and allowed them to be delivered with great power and yet in the middle of the desert, they picked those waterpots back up and wanted to turn back; they wanted to go back into bondage.

And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wildness? Wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? (Exodus 14:11)

Jesus traveled from city to city. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the six hour (John 4:6).

Betrayed by Audacious Men

Jesus was betrayed by audacious men. He was taken from hall to hall. They hired false witnesses to lie against Him. He endured all. He endured all just for me. He was tired, weary and beaten but He wasn’t too tired for me. He wasn’t too tired to die to save me. He would not come down from the cross just to save me. That’s love. That’s love. That’s the only way I could be free. He had to die. Christ's death brought my redemption. His shed blood brought my redemption. There was no ram in the bush for my Christ. He completed His mission.

He came to save a lost and dying world. He came through 14 generations, seeking me. You are just that important to the Saviour. What compassion He has for all of humanity.

A Life of Turmoil

My life was in turmoil before I met Jesus. Just like the woman at the well, I was living my life, going to draw water, having no idea that one day, I would draw one last time from man’s well.

There I was, stealing from momma, stealing from daddy, going in and out in the night. I could have been destroyed just at any old time. At any time, my life could have ended and in hell I would be today, but Christ looked beyond my faults and saw my needs. He heard the small, faint cry that was covered up by so many pretenses. He knew what I really wanted. He saw the real me; the one that needed love and compassion. Even when I didn’t know I was searching, I was searching.

Others Are Searching

Like me, there are others searching, searching, looking for something, and not knowing what – they searching for the Christ. We are all in need of our maker. What love. What love. What love the Master had for me. He looked beyond my faults and saw my needs. He saw the love that I needed. I dropped my old life; I dropped my waterpots and started a new life, a new life with Christ.

I Was the Woman . . . Caught in Adultery

There was the woman caught in adultery. This adultery, I saw it in my life as disobedience or just being involved in a life of sin. Under the law, the sentence was death, death, death for all sin. I was worthy of death before Christ came and rescued me. The woman caught in adultery wasn’t married and she was to be stoned. While we are not under the law now, the sentence is still the same. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of god is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).

The woman caught in adultery, both of us were just same. Her sentence should have been death and my sentence should have been death. You may say, “How did you know you were about to die?” Well I was living in sin and payday was on its way. The judgment of God was waiting at my door and the sword of judgment was over my life.

I was an enemy of the cross of Christ. How much longer could I have remained in such a state? Not long. The way the young people are dying today, how much longer could I have survived in sin? How long can you survive in this wicked and perverse generation without the Christ on your side?

The Deceit of Lucifer

It’s the deceit of Lucifer to think that you can sin a little and still make it to heaven. It’s the deceit of Lucifer to think that you can trample the blood of Jesus underfoot and still remain out of the hands of an angry God. Like the woman caught in adultery, all those around turned her in. That’s the deceit of Lucifer.

While you are running with his group, he’ll make you think he’s your friend but once you are uncovered, he’ll say he doesn’t know you. Many are tricked by this method in today’s society.

Caught Up in This World

And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act (John 8:3-4). I put myself in all kinds of dangerous positions – just caught up in this world. I had to find out the hard way and I admonish young people everywhere to listen to me, listen to what I am saying. For the wages of sin is death.

The devil never tells you the whole story. I just heard Christ saying, go away and sin no more. Go away and sin no more. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly, I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, who own the sheep are not, see the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep (John 10:10-13). The devil is not your friend. He is after your very soul.

He That Is Without Sin

The accusers continued, Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her (John 8:5-7).

And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more (verses 8-11).

My Accusers Were All Gone

I was sick and tired of being sick and tired of living a life of sin. My accusers were all gone and I was left with the Master; just us two, talking and agreeing. It was wonderful to be there in the presence of the Lord, working out my soul’s salvation. I lacked love, forgiveness and understanding. I was lost but now I am found. Come to Jesus dear one. The hour is so late.

Are you the woman at the well? Are you the woman caught in adultery? You too can be set free. Repeat this simple prayer, asking Jesus into your heart. He will come in and set you completely free. There is help for you.

Oh, God! I have sinned against you. I am so sorry! I have come home, and I’m going to serve you, Lord, the rest of my life. I do believe. I do believe that you are able to deliver me and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I believe that the blood of your Son, Jesus Christ can make me clean and whole. Come on into my heart and help me. Help me, Lord. I trust and believe that through the blood, I can make it. I do believe that I can make it with your help. Oh, Lord, I want your help. Save my soul. Love me, Jesus. I must have your love. Love me, Jesus. I will answer your call to salvation today. Come on into my heart, Jesus! Come in!

If you meant that prayer, He has come.

Praise Him, He is Yours!
